Madrid enjoys Newroz celebration fusing Kurdish, Spanish and Persion performers
Madrid, Spain (KRG.org) – On Saturday in Madrid more than 600 guests celebrated Newroz at a performance fusing Kurdish, Persian and Spanish music and dance.

The celebration was organized by the Persian Cultural Centre, Centro Persepolis, in collaboration with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Representation to Spain. It was unusual in being a fusion of three different yet complementary types of music, dance and traditional dress.

Mr Daban Shadala, the KRG Representative to Spain, said, “We organised this Newroz Festival celebration in Madrid to present Kurdistan’s rich culture to the Spanish public.”

He added, “The concert was really a mixture of cultures, regions, typical music and dance from Kurdistan, Iran and Spain, typical clothes from different parts of Kurdistan - symbolizing friendship and mutual understanding and acceptance of different cultures and nations. I am very pleased with the results and I am sure this event is another step in strengthening friendship between Spanish and Kurdish people.”

Since opening in 2010, the KRG Representation in Madrid has organized a Newroz celebration each year, each time attracting more guests and participants. But this was the first time that it brought two artistic groups from Kurdistan. Spain’s Ambassador to Iraq Jose Turpin was the guest of honour.

The performers were the Kurdish music group Sham from Slemani, a Kurdish dance group from Duhok, and a fusion of Persian and Flamenco music and dance from Granada, performed by the group Isfahan.
