Iraqi MP Withdraws from Parliament Session in Protest of General Amnesty Law

Iraqi MP Mahma Khalil announced his withdrawal from today’s parliamentary session in protest against the inclusion of the General Amnesty Law on the agenda. Khalil criticized the proposed law, arguing that it could lead to the release of individuals involved in heinous crimes, including those who have targeted Iraqi citizens and Yazidis, who endured a devastating genocide.

In his statement, Khalil condemned the law as a "betrayal of terrorism victims and their families" and described it as a means to honor terrorists who might otherwise face justice. He warned that the law could exacerbate societal divisions and emphasized that only strict punishment for terrorists could mend these rifts.

The Yazidi parliamentary bloc has also announced its boycott of the session, citing strong opposition to the General Amnesty Law. Naif Khalaf Saido, head of the Yazidi bloc, explained at a press conference that the law does not align with the interests of Iraqis and could allow some terrorists to escape accountability. He urged political parties to reconsider and reject the proposed legislation.
