Bekhal Waterfall Set for Major Renovation Under New Tourism Master Plan

The Bekhal waterfall, one of the Kurdistan Region’s most popular tourist destinations, is set to undergo significant renovations as part of a government-backed master plan to modernize touristic sites in Soran, according to local officials.

Hazhar Hakim, director of media and communications for the Soran administration, announced that the master plan, initiated by the prime minister, aims to redesign key attractions across the region. While the renovation project has been approved, Hakim clarified that work on the Bekhal resort has not yet begun, and the site remains open to visitors.

The Bekhal resort is renowned for its natural waterfall cascading through a canyon, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and slippery steps leading to panoramic views and fresh mineral water. The area serves as a major summer and tourist destination in the Kurdistan Region.

Faisal Sadiq, director general of tourism in Soran, outlined the broader scope of the project, which will extend from Khalifan to Bekhal. He promised “radical” improvements to tourist facilities and infrastructure while ensuring that existing business owners will not lose their livelihoods, with operations resuming once the project is completed.

Tourism statistics from the Soran region reveal that approximately one million visitors have flocked to the area annually over the past three years. Officials hope the renovation will enhance Bekhal’s appeal and boost tourism further, solidifying its status as a cornerstone of the region’s economy.

This project reflects the Kurdistan Regional Government’s commitment to fostering sustainable tourism while preserving local businesses and natural attractions.
