Syria Announces Dissolution of Ba’ath Party, Army, and Constitution in Landmark Political Shift

In a historic and sweeping political transformation, Syria’s Military Operations Department announced on Wednesday the dissolution of the ruling Ba’ath Party, the annulment of the 2012 constitution, and the disbanding of the country’s army and security forces. The announcement marks a profound shift in Syria’s political and military structure following years of conflict.

The Conference Declaring the Victory of the Syrian Revolution was held at the People’s Palace in Damascus, attended by various military factions and revolutionary forces. During the conference, a statement titled "Declaration of the Revolution’s Victory" was issued, officially naming Ahmad al-Sharaa as Syria’s transitional president. The statement outlined the repeal of the constitution, the dissolution of parliament, and the dismantling of state military and security institutions.

According to the statement, published by the Syrian News Agency (SANA), all military factions, as well as revolutionary political and civil organizations, will be integrated into newly formed state institutions. The Arab Socialist Ba’ath Party, which has governed Syria for decades, was officially disbanded, along with other parties affiliated with the National Progressive Front. The reformation of these political entities under new names was also prohibited, and all their assets were ordered to be transferred to the Syrian state.

"We declare the victory of the great Syrian revolution and designate December 8 as a national holiday," the statement read.

The announcement further detailed the dissolution of the People’s Council—Syria’s former parliament—and its affiliated committees, as well as the dismantling of the previous regime’s military structure. Plans were set forth to rebuild a new Syrian army based on national principles.

The statement concluded by confirming Ahmad al-Sharaa as the transitional president of Syria, granting him authority to represent the country in international forums and establish a temporary legislative council to oversee governance during the transitional period. This council will function until a new permanent constitution is drafted and implemented.

The move signifies one of the most significant political overhauls in Syria’s modern history, signaling the beginning of a new phase in the country’s governance and state-building efforts.
