SDC Meets Swedish Diplomat in Damascus to Discuss Northeast Syria

The Syrian Democratic Council (SDC) held a meeting on Wednesday in Damascus with the Swedish embassy to discuss the situation in northeast Syria (Rojava), including ongoing Turkish attacks, the council announced.

The SDC delegation was received by Jessica Svardstrom, Charge d'Affaires of Sweden’s embassy in Lebanon and Syria. According to an SDC statement, the meeting primarily focused on developments in Syria, with an emphasis on the security situation in the north and east of the country.

Svardstrom inquired about the progress of dialogue between the Kurdish-led authorities and the new administration in Damascus, as well as the status of relations and negotiations with Turkey. The SDC delegation highlighted external challenges, particularly Turkish interventions, which they said directly impact stability in the region. The council also warned of ongoing media incitement by Turkey-affiliated entities aimed at mobilizing opposition against the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Meanwhile, SDF chief Mazloum Abdi and Syria’s de facto leader Ahmed al-Sharaa recently met with American mediation to discuss the future of the SDF and the Rojava administration. Abdi described the meeting as positive, noting that negotiations are ongoing.

Turkey and its allied Syrian militia, the Syrian National Army (SNA), have intensified attacks on SDF-held areas near Manbij, including the Tishreen Dam and Qere Qozaq bridge. The SNA took control of Manbij and Til Rifaat following the collapse of Bashar al-Assad’s regime on December 8, after a swift offensive by the Islamist group Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) in late November. HTS, however, has not clashed with the SDF and has allowed US-backed Kurdish forces to maintain control over Kurdish-majority neighborhoods in Aleppo.

During the meeting, the SDC delegation warned that continued instability in Syria could have serious regional and international consequences, particularly affecting European security. The council underscored the importance of stabilizing Syria to ensure broader regional stability.
