KRG Cracks Down on Environmental Violations, Enforces Strict Measures

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has intensified efforts to combat environmental pollution by taking legal action against violators and activating a hotline for citizens to report environmental hazards.

According to Dilshad Hirani, director of Erbil's environment office, the newly implemented hotline has led to a surge in reports, with residents submitting photos and videos of pollution sources, including smoke emissions from generators and vehicles. "Based on the evidence, our teams are conducting direct inspections," Hirani stated on Wednesday.

In less than 20 days, seven generator owners have been referred to court, while three others have been penalized. Additionally, 50 generator owners have been mandated to make necessary environmental repairs to comply with regulations.

Authorities have also reported several vehicle owners to the Erbil Traffic Directorate for excessive smoke emissions, leading to fines. Restaurants and individuals caught burning waste have similarly faced penalties as part of the crackdown.

On January 12, 2025, KRG Prime Minister Masrour Barzani chaired a special meeting to address air pollution concerns in Erbil and Duhok provinces. He emphasized that environmental protection is a key government priority and called for collective responsibility in preserving Kurdistan’s natural beauty.

As part of the ongoing initiative, at least 41 unlicensed refineries in Erbil province have been shut down due to environmental concerns, an official announced on January 19. The closures align with the KRG’s broader campaign to tackle air pollution and enforce environmental regulations.

The latest measures highlight the KRG’s commitment to strengthening environmental enforcement and ensuring sustainable development across the region.
