KDP Welcomes Iraqi Parliament's Decision to Annul Ba’athist-Era Land Confiscation Laws

The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has commended the Iraqi parliament for passing a bill to annul Ba’athist-era policies that confiscated land from original owners, urging the federal government to act swiftly in implementing the legislation.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the KDP described the decision as an “important and necessary step” toward achieving justice. The party extended congratulations to its representatives and Kurdish factions for their efforts in securing the law’s passage.

“This step will further deepen the spirit of mutual acceptance and peaceful coexistence, and strengthen the foundations of building a new Iraq,” the statement read.

The KDP called on the federal government and relevant institutions to expedite the law’s implementation. “We expect the federal government to take measures to implement this law and not show indifference,” the statement added.

The newly passed legislation seeks to address a longstanding grievance by returning confiscated lands to their rightful owners. The Ba’athist regime's land confiscation policies disproportionately affected marginalized groups, including Kurds, leaving a legacy of injustice that the new law aims to rectify.

Observers view the decision as a significant step toward reconciliation and justice, potentially strengthening trust among Iraq’s diverse communities.
