President Barzani Condemns Threats Against Kurdish Farmers in Kirkuk

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – President Masoud Barzani has strongly condemned reported threats against Kurdish farmers in the Sargaran district of Kirkuk province by elements of the Iraqi army, calling such actions unjust and a violation of the rightful landowners’ rights. In a statement, Barzani urged authorities to take immediate corrective measures to prevent further injustices.

Expressing deep concern over the obstacles faced by Kurdish farmers in returning to their lands, Barzani noted that these actions evoke painful historical memories, including the Anfal campaign and other tragedies that befell the Kurdish people in the past century. He reiterated his firm stance against any discriminatory measures targeting the Kurdish community and called for adherence to legal frameworks that ensure their rights.

In response to these developments, Barzani appealed directly to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al-Sudani, urging swift intervention to halt these violations. He called for the immediate arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the threats and interference, emphasizing the need for accountability and justice.

Furthermore, President Barzani extended his full support to the Kurdish farmers resisting these challenges, assuring them that they are not alone in their struggle. He reaffirmed the commitment of the Kurdish leadership to defending their rights and demands, vowing continued efforts to protect their landownership.

Despite legal provisions nullifying Ba'ath-era land confiscation policies, Kurdish farmers in Shanagha village, Sargaran district, have faced interference from the Iraqi army while attempting to cultivate their lands. The incident highlights ongoing tensions regarding land rights in the region, prompting renewed calls for the enforcement of legal protections and the safeguarding of citizens' property rights.

The situation remains a key concern for Kurdish leadership, with President Barzani's firm stance underscoring the broader struggle for land ownership rights and justice in disputed areas. The Kurdistan Regional Government and other stakeholders continue to monitor developments closely, urging the Iraqi authorities to uphold the legal rights of all affected citizens.
