Iraqi Prime Minister Meets King Charles III, Strengthens UK Ties

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani met with King Charles III on Tuesday during an official visit to London, where they discussed bilateral relations and opportunities for deeper collaboration in various sectors.

According to a statement from Sudani’s office, the meeting reviewed ways to enhance cooperation between Iraq and the United Kingdom, particularly in economic and developmental fields. The discussions also touched on addressing climate change challenges and fostering cultural ties between the two nations.

Prime Minister Sudani expressed his gratitude for the invitation and reaffirmed Iraq’s commitment to advancing its relationship with the UK.

High-Level Delegation Accompanies Sudani

The Iraqi Prime Minister is leading a high-level delegation on this official visit, which includes ministers, members of parliament, the governor of Basra, advisors, and private-sector representatives. The delegation is also accompanied by business leaders from various industries, reflecting the broad scope of discussions aimed at strengthening Iraq-UK cooperation.

Focus on Security and Partnership

The visit builds on the strong relations between Iraq and the UK, highlighted by a Strategic Partnership signed in 2021. This agreement encompasses cooperation in areas such as the economy, education, military, and security. In December 2024, the two nations signed a landmark security agreement to enhance border security in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region, aimed at combating people smuggling and the narcotics trade.

Strengthening Collaboration

The visit also comes as part of an invitation from UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, signaling the commitment of both nations to bolster their longstanding ties. The meeting with King Charles III reflects the broader diplomatic and economic agenda underpinning Sudani’s trip, as Iraq seeks to expand partnerships and explore new opportunities for collaboration.

This visit underscores the growing relationship between Baghdad and London, fostering a future of stronger bilateral cooperation across multiple domains.
