Hengaw Report Highlights Escalating Human Rights Abuses in Iranian Kurdistan

The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights has reported a sharp increase in human rights violations across Iranian Kurdistan and the rest of Iran during 2024, revealing a grim escalation in violence, executions, and political repression.
According to Hengaw’s comprehensive report, 57 Kolbars—border couriers transporting goods between Iran and Iraq—were killed, and 282 others were injured over the year. A staggering 81% of these casualties resulted from direct fire by Iranian armed forces, underscoring the severe risks faced by Kolbars in border regions.
The report further outlines a surge in executions, with 901 prisoners executed in Iran during 2024. Arbitrary detentions also increased significantly, with over 1,200 individuals arrested, including political activists and protesters. Among these, 33 people were sentenced to death for political dissent.
Hengaw’s findings reveal a total of 468 political activists sentenced to 1,684 years of imprisonment, in addition to 94 years of suspended sentences and 2,547 lashes. Prison conditions remain dire, with 22 prisoners reportedly dying under suspicious circumstances while in custody.
Civilian casualties also rose, with 57 individuals killed by mines and explosives. The report notes a troubling increase in domestic violence, with at least 182 women killed by family members during the year.
Sanandaj and Kermanshah provinces were identified as the most affected regions for Kolbar casualties, recording 307 incidents combined. Hengaw’s data highlights a broader pattern of systemic violence and repression targeting vulnerable populations, including Kolbars, political dissidents, and civilians in border areas.
The report paints a stark picture of deteriorating human rights conditions in Iran, emphasizing the urgent need for international attention and action. Hengaw, an independent organization dedicated to documenting abuses in Kurdistan and across Iran, continues to shed light on these violations, calling for accountability and justice for victims.
