Kurdish Mother and Infant Among Victims in Deadly Migrant Boat Tragedy Near Greece

A Kurdish mother, Naila Mustafa Ahmad, and her four-month-old infant tragically drowned when a boat carrying 32 migrants capsized near the Greek island of Samos, the Returning Migrants' Association reported on Thursday.

The victims, originally from the Raparin independent administration in the Kurdistan Region, were among several casualties in the devastating incident, highlighting the continued dangers faced by migrants seeking better opportunities in Europe.

According to Peshraw Abdullah, a representative of the Returning Migrants' Association, the tragedy claimed the lives of two women and two children from the Kurdistan Region. "We urge the Kurdistan Regional Government to assist in repatriating the victims' bodies for proper burial in their homeland," Abdullah stated.

Preliminary reports suggest the boat sank due to adverse weather conditions, leaving families shattered by the loss of their loved ones. Rescue teams are working to recover the bodies and provide assistance to survivors, though authorities note the significant challenges of preventing such disasters during dangerous migration attempts.

This heartbreaking incident once again underscores the severe risks faced by migrants fleeing hardship, reigniting calls for safer migration pathways and stronger support for vulnerable communities in the region. The Aegean Sea remains a perilous route for migrants, many of whom risk their lives in overcrowded boats to escape dire conditions in search of safety and stability.

Authorities and aid organizations are urging immediate action to address the root causes of migration and to ensure safer alternatives for those seeking a better future.
