President Nechirvan Barzani Calls for Unification of Peshmerga Forces Under Ministry Oversight

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani has reaffirmed the importance of unifying the Peshmerga Forces under the Ministry of Peshmerga, emphasizing their role as a professional and independent national institution. His remarks came during a graduation ceremony on Saturday for the fourth class of officer cadets at the Qalachwalan Military College.

Addressing the event, President Barzani congratulated the 769 graduates, including 48 women, who completed nine months of rigorous training. He praised their commitment, calling their achievement "a vital turning point in the history of the Peshmerga and the armed forces in the Kurdistan Region."

Barzani underscored the need for a nonpartisan military force, stating, “The Peshmerga and our armed forces must remain free from political and party conflicts, belonging solely to the nation and the people of Kurdistan, including all its components.” He added that the Peshmerga are a key part of Iraq’s defense system, urging the federal government to support their enhancement in every way.

Highlighting the contributions of Kurdish women in the region's history, Barzani commended the female cadets’ participation, describing it as a testament to their essential role in building and defending the nation.

The President also acknowledged the ongoing sacrifices of the Peshmerga, particularly in the fight against ISIS, noting, "Their heroic actions and sacrifices have mingled their blood across every part of Kurdistan."

Barzani emphasized the importance of continued collaboration between the Peshmerga, the Iraqi Army, and coalition forces. He expressed gratitude to coalition forces for their ongoing efforts to reform and unify the Peshmerga under the Ministry of Peshmerga.

“This ministry is a national force, defending the achievements of the Kurdistan Region and ensuring its future,” Barzani concluded.

The ceremony marked another step toward strengthening the Peshmerga as a unified and modern force, reflective of the Kurdistan Region's aspirations for stability and professionalism in its military institutions.
