KRG's Development Boom in 2024: Major Achievements Across Sectors

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In 2024, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), led by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, initiated and completed a series of transformative projects aimed at enhancing the region’s infrastructure and economic stability. From roads and water security to health and education, the ninth cabinet has made strides in implementing strategic initiatives to serve the people of the Kurdistan Region.

Revamping the Roads Network

The KRG has made significant progress in the transportation sector, with several strategic road projects either completed or initiated this year. Among the highlights was the opening of the dual carriageway connecting Spilik, Khalifan, and Soran, as well as the Kazna Road, linking Erbil to the Erbil-Duhok main highway. Additionally, Rania and Awakhiri bridges were completed, improving connectivity across the region.

Foundations were also laid for new projects, including the Erbil-Koisanjaq dual carriageway and the Bardarash-Khabat Road. Other key projects include roads linking Baadre to Itout and Sheikhan to Lalish, as well as connections to villages near Halabja.

Strengthening Food Security

In a bid to bolster agricultural and food production, the KRG launched numerous projects this year. These include the Goishtapa grain silo, costing 21.2 billion IQD, with a storage capacity of 40,000 tons of wheat. The Sulivana Factory was established in Zakho to market local farmers' produce, and a wholesale fruit and vegetable market was opened in Akre at a cost of 28.6 billion IQD, making it the second-largest in Iraq.

Halabja also saw the foundation stone laid for a new grain silo worth 27.2 billion IQD, with a storage capacity of 40,000 tons. In addition, Iraq’s largest livestock project is set to open soon in the Kurdistan Region, reflecting the government's commitment to agricultural advancement.

Enhancing Water Security

Addressing water scarcity and climate change, the KRG prioritized water security with several major initiatives. Key projects include the construction of the Jamrka, Bastura, and Kumsapan dams, which collectively store 120 million cubic meters of water.

The Emergency Water Project for Erbil, already 50% complete, promises to secure the city's water needs for the next 30 years. Additionally, the Goishtapa Water Project, benefiting over two million residents, was launched, accompanied by plans to close 1,100 groundwater wells. The Dwen Dam project, with a capacity of 100 million cubic meters, also began construction.

Boosting Industry and Tourism

The government offered incentives to investors in the industrial and tourism sectors, resulting in significant developments. The Erbil (Safar) Cable Company and a medical syringe factory were inaugurated, representing industrial growth.

In tourism, the Zakho Corniche Project entered its second phase, a five-star hotel opened atop Mount Korek, and Duhok saw the foundation stone laid for the Serheldan Park. These initiatives aim to make Kurdistan a leading tourist destination.

Investments in Health and Education

The KRG made notable advancements in health and education. Among the key projects were the foundations for the largest cancer treatment hospital in Iraq and a drug rehabilitation center. In education, 42 new schools were inaugurated, addressing a growing need for modern learning facilities.

A Leap in Electricity Supply

In the electricity sector, the launch of the "Ronaki" Project is expected to revolutionize energy access in the Kurdistan Region. The project aims to ensure 24-hour electricity for all governorates by the end of 2026. Already, 100,000 subscribers across Erbil, Sulaimani, and Duhok are benefiting from this initiative.

Looking Ahead

The KRG's ambitious agenda for 2024 underscores its commitment to long-term development and sustainability. Beyond the headline projects, hundreds of medium and small-scale initiatives have been implemented across the Kurdistan Region, reflecting the government's dedication to serving its citizens.

These transformative projects set the stage for a brighter future, with a focus on economic stability, environmental protection, and improved quality of life for all residents.
