Kurdistan Region: Over 6,000 Archaeological Sites Documented, International Teams Contribute to Preservation Efforts

The Directorate of Antiquities in the Kurdistan Region has identified nearly 6,000 archaeological sites, with 30 active teams conducting surveys and excavations annually, according to Kaifi Mustafa, Director of Kurdistan Region's Antiquities.

Speaking to Kurdistan24, Mustafa revealed that Duhok province has led in comprehensive archaeological surveys, followed by Sulaimani and Erbil provinces. Preservation efforts remain a top priority for the Directorate, ensuring the protection of these sites spanning thousands of years of historical significance.

"We receive many international archaeological teams visiting the Kurdistan Region every year, mainly from the United States, Japan, Europe, and several other countries," Mustafa said, emphasizing the global interest in the region's rich heritage.

These international teams not only engage in excavation missions but also participate in training programs that bolster local expertise in archaeology and preservation. Their contributions have solidified the Kurdistan Region’s status as a vital hub for archaeological research in the Middle East.

Home to a legacy of civilizations, including those of ancient Mesopotamia, the Kurdistan Region's historical treasures have attracted significant international attention. The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has taken proactive measures to preserve and document these sites since gaining autonomous administration.

Collaborations with international archaeological teams have enhanced the region's preservation capabilities and expanded global knowledge of ancient cultures. Mustafa highlighted that such partnerships are crucial for uncovering and understanding the historical richness of the region.

The ongoing efforts by the Directorate and its international partners underline the importance of safeguarding the cultural heritage of the Kurdistan Region, ensuring it continues to be a source of historical insight for future generations.
