KRG Continues Work on Gope Tepe–Chamchamal Water Project

The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced today that work on the Gope Tepe–Chamchamal water project is progressing steadily. According to the ministry, the design phase has been completed, and efforts are now focused on pouring concrete and preparing to install electricity lines and water pipes.

A report from the General Directorate of Water and Sewerage indicated that 90% of the land survey has been completed, and soil testing is 100% finished. Additionally, excavation has begun on an area of 15,000 cubic meters to facilitate the installation of 28 kilometers of water transmission pipelines.

This strategic project, aimed at addressing long-standing water shortages in Chamchamal and surrounding areas, is being constructed under the direction of Prime Minister Masrour Barzani. The project’s completion is a top priority for the KRG, which is committed to finishing it on schedule.

With a total cost of 114 billion Iraqi dinars, funded by the KRG, the project is slated for completion within 720 days, starting from August 12, 2024. The Ministry of Municipalities and Tourism, along with the General Directorate of Water and Sewerage, will oversee the execution of the project.

This initiative is expected to significantly improve the water supply for residents of Chamchamal, who have endured years of water shortages.
