Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani emphasized the need for greater attention and investment in the education sector during a foundation stone-laying ceremony for 15 new kindergartens and schools in the Khabat district, west of Erbil.

PM Barzani announced ambitious plans to build 194 schools by the end of the year, while 1,670 existing schools are set to undergo renovation. The 15 new schools in Khabat will be constructed with private sector support.

"In order for our students to study in a suitable environment, we need more schools and educational materials. Schools must meet a standard level of quality," Barzani stated, highlighting the pressing need for improved infrastructure in the education sector.

He acknowledged that, in recent years, a lack of comprehensive planning and the pressures faced by the Kurdistan Region have hindered the development of robust educational infrastructure. "There is much work to be done to improve this crucial sector," the Prime Minister noted, adding that both the Ministry of Education and private sector have made significant strides, with dozens of new schools built and thousands more renovated.

The selection of Khabat for the foundation stone-laying ceremony underscores the government's commitment to the region, which Barzani said deserves more services and development. He also praised the recent progress in addressing teacher employment concerns, following a meeting with educators last month where he pledged to secure contract-based employment for them.

"I’m pleased to see that we have fulfilled this promise in less than a month. I hope these teachers will continue their important work as contract teachers in the future," he said, commending the dedication of teachers who have persevered despite ongoing challenges.

Barzani concluded his speech by reaffirming the government's commitment to serving the Kurdish people and pushing back against attempts to mislead public opinion or undermine their achievements. "It is our duty to serve the Kurdish people, and we will stay committed to this path, always in the interest of the Kurdish people," he declared.

The event marks a significant step in the KRG’s efforts to expand and improve education infrastructure across the region.
