Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani Attends Inauguration of Iran’s President-Elect Masoud Pezeshkian

Kurdistan Region President Nechirvan Barzani arrived in Tehran on Tuesday to attend the inauguration of Iran’s President-elect Masoud Pezeshkian. Upon his arrival, Barzani was received by Iran's Minister of Communications and Information Technology, Issa Zarepour.

According to Iranian state media, delegates from 80 countries are expected to attend the inauguration of the reformist leader. Among the notable attendees is Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani.

Masoud Pezeshkian was formally endorsed as president of the Islamic republic by Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, on Sunday.

President Barzani has a history of engaging with Iranian leaders, having attended the swearing-in ceremony of the late Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi in August 2021. Barzani's frequent visits to Tehran, including a trip in early May and his return for Raisi’s funeral, have significantly bolstered the ties between Tehran and Erbil. Mohammad Kazem Al-e Sadeq, Iran's ambassador to Baghdad, emphasized the importance of Barzani's visits in strengthening bilateral relations.

Additionally, Iran’s acting foreign minister, Ali Bagheri Kani, visited Baghdad and Erbil in June, further highlighting the ongoing diplomatic engagement.

The Kurdistan Region and Iran maintain strong relations. Speaking at a forum in Sulaimani in April, President Barzani acknowledged Iran’s contribution to the economic success of the Kurdistan Region.
