Iranian Border Guards Shoot Kolber in Hawraman, Kurdistan Region
Iranian border guards shot a Kolber near Kamanjar Mountain in the Hawraman area on Monday, leaving him severely injured. The victim, reportedly from Daramat village in the Khurmal district, was initially taken to a local hospital before being transferred to a medical facility in Sulaimaniyah due to the severity of his injuries. The identity of the injured Kolber has not yet been confirmed.
Kolbers, or porters, carry heavy loads across the mountainous borders between Iran and the Kurdistan Region, often at great personal risk. Iranian border guards frequently open fire on these porters, considering their work illegal.
This incident follows a series of violent actions against Kolbers. The Hengaw Organization for Human Rights reported on Saturday that a Kolber named Nazim Safari from Sawlawa city was killed at the Nawsood border. Additionally, Ihsan Nowrozi from Gilan was killed at the Marivan border. Four other porters were arrested, beaten, and injured by Iranian armed forces.
According to Hengaw, several Kolbers were shot dead in Dzawar village of Nawsood province on Saturday morning, including Nawin from Sawlawa city, who was hit by two Kalashnikov bullets in the chest.
On July 22, Ehsan Naroozi, a 25-year-old Kolber from Gilan city of Kermanshah province, was shot dead by armed forces in Marivan. His body was buried in his hometown on Friday.
The day before, four porters named Mohammad, Behrooz, Dilyar, and Hissam from Dshe village in Paveh city were arrested by Iranian forces while working at the Nawsood border and were sent to medical centers for treatment.
The ongoing violence against Kolbers highlights the dangerous conditions they face while attempting to earn a living and the urgent need for international attention and intervention to address this human rights issue.
