Mohammed Ismail Elected President of the Kurdish National Council in Syria

Mohammed Ismail has been elected as the new president of the Kurdish National Council in Syria (KNCS), replacing Suleiman Oso. The election took place on Thursday in Qamishli and was confirmed by council spokesperson Faysal Yusuf, who highlighted that Oso’s term was fixed and not eligible for consecutive re-election.

Ismail’s election marks the continuation of the council’s leadership rotation policy, which ensures regular changes in leadership. His appointment follows Oso’s six-month tenure, which ended in accordance with KNCS regulations.

The KNCS has previously demonstrated its commitment to leadership rotation. In November 2023, Ni'mat Dawoodi was appointed as chairman, succeeding Saud Mullah, who resigned in March of the same year.

Founded in October 2011 in Erbil, Iraq, under the patronage of President Masoud Barzani, the KNCS was established to unify Kurdish political factions in Syria. The council advocates for Kurdish rights and represents Kurdish interests within the broader Syrian opposition. It comprises a coalition of parties and organizations working toward greater autonomy and recognition for Kurds in the region.

Ismail’s leadership comes at a crucial time as the council continues its efforts to strengthen Kurdish representation and advance the rights of Kurdish communities in Syria.
