Kurds and Shiites Await Sunni Agreement on Iraqi Parliament Speaker Candidate

Iraqi Member of Parliament from the Kurdistan Democratic Party, Sherwan Doberdani, announced that the Kurds and Shiites are awaiting the Sunnis' agreement on a candidate for the position of Speaker of Parliament.

In an exclusive statement to Kurdistan 24, Doberdani revealed that during a recent meeting in Baghdad, President Barzani and leaders of Shiite and Sunni parties agreed on the necessity of reorganizing the Sunni political bloc and selecting a single candidate for the Speaker position.

"The Iraqi parties, under President Barzani's leadership, have reached an agreement to amend Article 12 of the Parliament's internal regulations. This agreement is contingent on the Sunnis ceasing to nominate multiple candidates for the position," Doberdani stated. "All parties are committed to this agreement and are now waiting for the Sunnis to take the next step."

Doberdani emphasized the importance of Sunni unity, saying, "It is essential for the Sunni parties to agree on a consensus candidate and present this candidate to the Kurds and the Coordination Framework, enabling the amendment of Article 12 and its subsequent vote in Parliament."

He further noted that the Coordination Framework is scheduled to meet next Monday to finalize their decision on the matter. "I expect the Sunni parties to make their decision within the next two days," he added.

Doberdani highlighted the necessity of political consensus for legislative progress, stating, "The Iraqi Parliament cannot pass any law without a political agreement among the parties that form the State Administration Coalition."

In the event that the Sunnis fail to agree on a consensus candidate, Doberdani mentioned that the Coordination Framework might approve the Sunni candidate who receives the most votes in the Parliament session.
