Kurdistan Region Announces New Refugee Regulations

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – In a ceremony attended by Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, new regulations for organizing the affairs of refugees in the Kurdistan Region were announced today.

The Kurdistan Region is home to 900,467 displaced persons and refugees, both inside and outside camps. This population includes 269,293 refugees from other countries, consisting of 251,475 Syrian refugees, 7,796 Turkish refugees, 8,357 Iranian refugees, and 652 Palestinian refugees. Additionally, there are 10,013 refugees from other nations.

In 2023, a total of 2,097 refugees returned to their home countries, while 3,389 new refugees arrived in the Kurdistan Region.

The Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has welcomed these refugees and provided them with a range of services, covering 80% of their expenses, which are estimated to be around $842 million annually.

Regarding education for the children of displaced persons and refugees, the KRG has allocated 53 schools, accommodating 40,410 students across various educational stages.

Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the KRG's commitment to supporting refugees and displaced persons, ensuring they receive necessary services and support as they integrate into the community.
