US Urges Turkey to Coordinate with Iraqi and Kurdish Authorities in Military Operations
The United States has called upon the Turkish government to work closely with Iraqi and Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) authorities regarding any cross-border military operations targeting Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) fighters.
Speaking to the press on Tuesday, Vedant Patel, Principal Deputy Spokesperson for the US State Department, emphasized the importance of protecting civilians and respecting Iraqi sovereignty amidst ongoing security challenges.
“We have urged our partners in the Government of Turkey to coordinate with both Iraqi and Kurdistan Region of Iraq authorities on any cross-border military operations to protect civilians from harm,” Patel stated firmly.
“We recognize the threat posed by the PKK, but it is crucial for all actions to respect Iraqi sovereignty and be conducted in coordination with local authorities,” Patel added.
The statement comes amid escalating tensions in the region, where Turkish military operations against PKK targets in the Kurdistan Region have raised concerns over civilian casualties and sovereignty violations.
The US State Department’s stance underscores its commitment to stability and cooperation in the Middle East, advocating for dialogue and lawful conduct in addressing security threats.
“We urge the Turkish government to engage in diplomatic channels and respect international norms in addressing security concerns,” Patel reiterated, highlighting the need for transparent and coordinated efforts in combating terrorism while upholding regional stability.
As the situation in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region continues to evolve, international stakeholders are closely monitoring for further developments and diplomatic responses.
