KDP Announces Preparations for Kurdistan Parliamentary Elections Following Election Date Announcement

ERBIL, Kurdistan Region – The Kurdistan Democratic Party (KDP) has begun preparations for the upcoming Kurdistan Region parliamentary elections, scheduled for October 20, according to a statement by KDP spokesperson Mahmoud Mohammed on Wednesday.

In the statement, Mohammed addressed the people of Kurdistan, highlighting the party's continuous efforts since 2022 to ensure the sixth parliamentary elections were conducted before the expiration of legal deadlines. He noted that numerous obstacles were deliberately created, negatively impacting the political and legal processes in the Kurdistan Region, which in turn affected the region's authorities and rights. The KDP had attempted to propose solutions to the elected parliament for legal resolution, but these attempts were also hindered.

"Our party announced its stance to the resilient people of Kurdistan on March 18, 2024, pointing out the deficiencies and the absence of justice that obstructed the process, including issues related to the rights of various components and the problem with voter identification, which threatened to deprive hundreds of thousands of their right to vote," Mohammed said. He added that these issues were accompanied by numerous matters related to the election process. Following the party's statement, some of these concerns were addressed, while others remain unresolved.

The KDP spokesperson acknowledged that while the solutions were not 100% satisfactory, some rights of Kurdistan's components were restored, and a significant portion of other issues were settled. Therefore, following the announcement of the election date by the Kurdistan Region President, the KDP is now preparing for the parliamentary elections. Mohammed expressed hope that the election process would be conducted democratically, fairly, and transparently, with results benefiting the people of Kurdistan.

This announcement comes after the Kurdistan Region Presidency set October 20 as the date for the parliamentary elections, aiming to overcome past delays and ensure a successful and inclusive electoral process.
