US Condemns Iraqi Militia Attack on American Forces, Citing Iranian Disregard for Iraqi Sovereignty

The US State Department has issued a condemnation following a recent assault by Iraqi militias with alleged ties to Iran against US forces stationed in both Iraq and Syria. This condemnation underscores growing tensions in the region and raises concerns about sovereignty violations.

During a press briefing, State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller expressed deep concern over the timing of the attack. He noted that the assault occurred mere hours after a successful visit to Washington by Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani, suggesting a lack of respect for Iraqi sovereignty on Iran's part.

Miller emphasized the US stance on defending its interests and personnel, reaffirming a commitment to responding to such attacks. This response comes amid escalating tensions between the US and Iran, with the latter's influence over Iraqi militias being a focal point of contention.

The attack, which took place near the Rmeilan base in Syria, was swiftly countered by coalition forces, averting casualties among US personnel. However, the incident underscores the persistent threat posed by militia groups in the region.

Iraqi security sources reported that at least five rockets were launched from the town of Zammar in Iraq towards a US military installation in northeastern Syria. This assault marks the first direct attack against US forces since early February, when armed militias in Iraq temporarily halted their operations against American troops.

In response to the attack, a US aircraft targeted a missile platform within Iraqi territory believed to have been used in the assault on the Syrian base. This retaliatory strike further highlights the volatile nature of the situation and the potential for further escalation.

As tensions persist, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the complex geopolitical dynamics at play in the region, with the sovereignty of Iraq caught in the crossfire of broader regional rivalries and power struggles.
