Iraqi Prime Minister Urges Fair Elections in Kurdistan Region

In a bid to ensure transparency and inclusivity in the upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani has urged for fair proceedings. This call to action followed a crucial meeting between Prime Minister al-Sudani and top officials of the Independent High Electoral Commission (IHEC) on Monday.

During the meeting, Prime Minister al-Sudani stressed the paramount importance of addressing any obstacles that may impede the electoral process. He emphasized the necessity of implementing legal mechanisms to safeguard the integrity of the elections, ensuring they accurately reflect the will of the Kurdish people.

President Nechirvan Barzani of the Kurdistan Region affirmed on Sunday that the scheduled date for the parliamentary elections remains unchanged, underscoring the commitment to democratic processes within the region.

According to Jumana al-Ghalai, spokesperson for the IHEC, more than 3.7 million individuals are eligible to cast their votes in the Kurdistan Region. Encouragingly, over 2.7 million citizens have already renewed their voter registration cards, representing a significant 26% of the total electorate.

The upcoming parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region hold immense significance, not only for the region itself but also for Iraq as a whole. As preparations continue, Prime Minister al-Sudani's call for fairness and transparency echoes the shared aspirations for a democratic and representative electoral process in the Kurdistan Region.
