Israeli Airstrikes in Syria Wound Civilians, Escalating Tensions
Late Sunday, Syrian defense authorities confirmed that Israeli airstrikes on southeast Syria's Damascus resulted in the injury of at least two individuals. The strikes, reportedly launched from the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, targeted areas near Damascus, causing significant material damage, according to the Syrian defense ministry.
The UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) reported that the airstrikes, involving at least four missiles, specifically targeted a scientific research facility in Jomrayah. Ambulances were deployed to the scene to transport two casualties. This incident follows a recent escalation, as Israeli airstrikes struck multiple locations in Aleppo on Friday, including positions held by Iran-backed militias and Syrian military installations. The attack resulted in a death toll of at least 52 individuals, as per SOHR, with casualties including regime soldiers and members of Lebanese Hezbollah.
Israel's actions in Syria have been ongoing throughout the country's lengthy civil war, frequently targeting areas controlled by the Syrian government and allied militias. The strikes are often aimed at groups such as Lebanon's Hezbollah, which is supportive of the Syrian regime and has close ties to Iran.
The recent surge in Israeli airstrikes, notably intensified since October 7, has raised concerns about escalating tensions in the region. According to SOHR, there have been at least 29 Israeli attacks on Syrian territory since the beginning of the year, resulting in the deaths of at least 125 people and injuring over 67 others.
In a separate incident, Syrian state media reported that two civilians were killed after an Israeli strike hit a residential building in the outskirts of Damascus. While Israel typically refrains from officially commenting on its military operations in Syria, it has repeatedly expressed its opposition to Iran's growing influence in the region and has vowed to take action to prevent it.
As tensions continue to escalate, the situation in Syria remains volatile, with the risk of further confrontation between regional powers remaining a significant concern.
