Kurdistan Regional Government Allocates Over 51 Billion Dinars for Cancer Treatment in 2023
In a significant development, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) has revealed that it invested more than 51 billion dinars in cancer treatment during the year 2023. Muzaffer Yaba Salih, the Executive Director of the Cancer Aid Fund, shared this information with the Media and Information Office, outlining the region's commitment to addressing the pressing issue of cancer within its borders.
Salih explained that in cases where local treatment options are not available, patients are directed to the aid fund, which facilitates their access to treatment or surgery abroad. This approach aims to ensure that patients receive the necessary care, regardless of geographic constraints.
One heartwarming success story emerged from Nanakali Hospital, where three-year-old cancer patient Halwest Mohammed has shown positive results after undergoing treatment. Expressing gratitude, Mohammed stated, "I have been receiving treatment in this hospital for two to three years," highlighting the impact of dedicated healthcare efforts in the region.
Despite global challenges, the Kurdistan Region continues to make progress in managing cancer cases. The global cancer incidence rate is 190 cases per 100,000 people, whereas the Kurdistan Region reports a lower rate of 151 cases per 100,000 people, signaling positive advancements in cancer treatment. The total number of infections in 2023 reached 9,900.
Dr. Chenar Sanjawi, head of the cancer control department, emphasized the crucial role of early detection, urging citizens to seek medical attention promptly if they experience any symptoms associated with cancer. This proactive approach significantly improves the chances of successful treatment.
The Kurdistan Regional Government has been at the forefront of cancer care, treating patients in eight hospitals and specialized cancer centers. The substantial financial investment underscores the government's commitment to providing accessible and effective healthcare services, further positioning the region in the ongoing battle against cancer.
