Prime Minister Barzani Urges Action Against Attacks on Kurdistan, Calls for International Support
In a press conference held on Friday, Kurdistan Region Prime Minister Masrour Barzani addressed the recent spate of attacks on the region, characterizing them as intentional efforts to dismantle vital infrastructure. While expressing gratitude for the support of friendly nations, Prime Minister Barzani emphasized the urgent need for tangible actions to curb the attacks and safeguard the security of Kurdistan and all of Iraq.
Prime Minister Barzani specifically called on the Iraqi federal government to take concrete measures to eliminate the threat posed by assailants, ensuring the safety and stability of the region. He urged international allies to provide on-the-ground support to ensure the security, economic stability, and political harmony of the Kurdish people.
The recent attack on the Khor Mor oil and gas plant, which occurred late Thursday, prompted Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ al-Sudani to launch a two-day investigation to identify and bring the assailants to justice. Two Katyusha rockets targeted the Khor Mor facility in Chamchamal, resulting in a fire in a warehouse containing crude oil and gas waste.
The Khor Mor oil production plant, located in the Qadir Karam Sub-district of Chamchamal District, is of significant strategic importance, with reserves estimated at over 7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas. Key producers Dana Gas and Crescent Petroleum had announced a daily production of 552 million cubic feet of natural gas in early 2022.
The attacks on crucial energy infrastructure have raised concerns about the stability and security of the Kurdistan Region. Prime Minister Barzani's call for international support underscores the gravity of the situation and the need for collaborative efforts to address and prevent further threats to the region's prosperity and well-being.
