U.S. Forces Conduct Airstrikes on Kataib Hezbollah Targets in Iraq in Response to Militant Attacks
The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on Wednesday that U.S. forces carried out airstrikes targeting pro-Iran Kataib Hezbollah forces in Iraq. The military action was in direct response to recent attacks by the militia against U.S. forces in the region.
"In response to attacks by the Iranian-backed militia group Kataib Hezbollah (KH), including the attack on al-Asad Airbase in western Iraq on Jan. 20, on Jan. 24 at 12:15 a.m. (Iraq time), U.S. CENTCOM forces conducted unilateral airstrikes against three facilities used by Iranian-backed Kataib Hezbollah militia group and other Iran-affiliated groups in Iraq," stated CENTCOM in a press release on X.
The statement outlined that the precision airstrikes were targeted at Kataib Hezbollah's headquarters, storage facilities, and training sites linked to rocket, missile, and one-way attack UAV capabilities.
The military action follows a brazen attack on Ain al-Asad base in Iraq last Saturday, where U.S. troops are stationed. During the assault, multiple ballistic missiles and rockets, launched by militants supported by Iran from within Iraq, struck the base, resulting in injuries to four U.S. personnel.
Since the escalation of the conflict between Israel and Palestine in early October, U.S. troops in Iraq and Syria have faced approximately 150 attacks by Iran-aligned forces. The ongoing attacks have heightened tensions in the region, prompting the U.S. military to take measures to protect its personnel and assets.
The situation continues to evolve, and the international community closely monitors developments amid concerns over the escalation of hostilities in the already volatile region.
