Thousands Protest in Akre Against IRGC Attacks on Erbil, Demand End to Aggression
In a powerful display of unity, thousands of residents flooded the streets of Akre town on Monday, denouncing the recent attacks by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of Iran on Erbil in the Kurdistan Region. The assault, which occurred last week, resulted in the tragic death of at least four civilians.
Representatives from diverse faith communities and various professions participated in the mass gathering at the heart of Akre town. The demonstrators proudly hoisted the Kurdistan flag and echoed patriotic slogans, conveying their steadfast commitment to the region's sovereignty.
Protesters voiced their call for Iran and the international community to halt the attacks on Erbil, emphasizing that the Kurdish region harbors no territorial ambitions. A demonstrator, who chose to remain anonymous, urged an end to the violence, asserting that the will of the Kurdish people stands resolute.
Amidst the crowd, another protester declared, "Our will is stronger than Mount Peres," referencing one of the prominent mountains in the Kurdistan Region.
Similar expressions of dissent have echoed across other areas, with mass protests taking place in the Bardarash district. Erbil, Duhok, and Zakho have also witnessed significant demonstrations condemning the deadly attacks.
The recent incident targeted the private residence of Kurdish construction tycoon Peshraw Dizayee, resulting in his tragic demise along with his less-than-a-year-old daughter, a guest, and a housekeeper. The IRGC claimed the site was a "Mossad espionage center," an allegation vehemently rejected by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG), which dismissed the accusations as "baseless."
Iraqi National Security Advisor Qassem Al-Araji and an Iraqi parliamentary investigation team concurred, stating that the attacked location was a "family residence" and rejecting the IRGC's claims.
Human Rights Watch, in a statement on Monday, affirmed that Iran's attack had exclusively claimed the lives of civilians in the house. This incident is not the first of its kind, as Iran previously targeted the private residence of oil tycoon Sheikh Baz in early 2022, alleging it was a "Mossad spy center." The KRG and the Iraqi government rejected these claims, and international condemnation ensued.
