President Nechirvan Barzani held a meeting on Saturday with Ms. Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Iraq and Head of UNAMI, to address the current political and security situation in the country. The primary focus of their discussion centered on the forthcoming provincial council elections and the Erbil-Baghdad relationship.

Both emphasized the significance of ensuring a smooth and successful voting process for the provincial council elections. They stressed the need to maintain a secure environment throughout the process, particularly in the Disputed Territories, in order to conduct the elections peacefully and in a stable manner.

In terms of Erbil-Baghdad relations, both sides expressed positive views on the efforts and role of Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani. They expressed hope for further development in the relationship between the federal government and the Kurdistan Regional Government, aiming to resolve any outstanding issues through mutual understanding and in accordance with the Constitution.

Their meeting also included discussions on the latest developments in the Middle East and their potential consequences.
