Iraq Named Among the Most Vulnerable Nations to Climate Change by US Consulate in Erbil
ERBIL, Iraq - In a recent statement released on Sunday, the US Consulate General in Erbil confirmed that Iraq is among the nations most at risk from the impacts of climate change. The consulate emphasized the urgent need for global action to address this pressing issue.
"Climate change poses a global challenge, especially in Iraq, which is one of the most exposed countries to risk, with its numerous consequences including desertification, drought, and seasonal changes. The impact is evident in the decreasing river levels and the widening of deserts," the statement read.
The US Consulate pointed to a collaborative effort initiated in 2020 to address these challenges. The Ankaawa Humanitarian Committee (AHC), supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), was established with the aim of enhancing organizational management and improving the skills of its employees. AHC has been actively engaged in partnerships with various entities on climate change projects, focusing on supporting vulnerable populations in Iraq.
"In 2022, the Climate Change Adaptation Solutions provided by AHC assisted farmers in Dohuk province by introducing environmentally-friendly agricultural techniques and modern methods. AHC empowered farmers to combat the adverse effects of climate change, enhancing productivity and income for these communities," the consulate stated.
As climate change continues to pose severe threats globally, the US Consulate General in Erbil highlighted the importance of collaborative efforts and international cooperation in addressing these challenges. The statement concluded with a call to action: "Together, we strive for a better future."
Climate change remains a critical issue impacting regions around the world, and Iraq's inclusion among the most vulnerable nations underscores the urgency for both local and global efforts to mitigate its effects.
