Mass Demonstration in Duhok Demands Justice for Slain Protesters and Kurdistan Region's Fair Share of Budget
Thousands of Duhok residents gathered in Newroz Park on Tuesday morning to protest the killing of four Kurdish protesters in Kirkuk and the Iraqi government's failure to allocate the Kurdistan Region its rightful share of the national budget. The demonstrators, hailing from various cities and towns including Akre, Bardarash, Semel, Amedi, Shekhan, and Zakho, expressed solidarity with the families of the martyrs and those injured in Kirkuk.
The protesters called upon the Iraqi government to uphold the principles of the Iraqi constitution, adhere to the federal budget law, and honor its agreements with the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).
Mullah Anas Doski, one of the organizers of the demonstration, conveyed that the purpose of the protest was to send a clear message to both the political parties within the Kurdistan Region and the international community. They demanded a change in the policies of the Iraqi government.
During the demonstration, Duhok Governor Ali Tatar addressed the crowd, emphasizing the specific demands of the people of Duhok. He called for the implementation of constitutional articles pertaining to the Kurdish population, particularly Article 140, the prompt disbursement of the Kurdistan Region's financial entitlements, and the fulfillment of recent agreements between the Kurdistan Region and the Iraqi government.
Governor Tatar stated, "It is important that the demonstrators directed their demands, which were constitutional, legal, and peaceful, to the Iraqi government and expressed their attitude towards Baghdad's decisions."
In another part of his speech, Governor Tatar expressed gratitude to the citizens who participated in the demonstration, acknowledging their diverse representation from across Duhok governorate and the broader Kurdistan Region. He also extended his appreciation to the Asayish security forces for their role in maintaining security during the demonstration.
On Monday, Peshawa Hawramani, the spokesman for the KRG, had denounced the Iraqi government's "policy of deprivation" against the people of the Kurdistan Region. The mass demonstration in Duhok serves as a powerful expression of the region's demands for justice and fair treatment within the framework of Iraq's constitutional and legal obligations.
