Kurdistan Regional Government Announces Reforms and Unification of Peshmerga Forces

The Kurdistan Regional Government, in collaboration with the international coalition, has unveiled a comprehensive plan to enhance the security and cohesion of the region through the unification and reorganization of the Peshmerga forces. This initiative, directed by Prime Minister Masrour Barzani, aims to strengthen the region's security apparatus and consolidate its power.

As part of this strategic endeavor, Prime Minister Barzani has issued orders for the creation of three new brigades, which will be integrated into the Peshmerga Ministry. These newly established brigades, designated as the 26th, 28th, and 30th brigades, comprise a combined total of 5,400 personnel, including officers and enlisted members from Unit 70. These units will fall under the supervision of the Second Division, headed by the Regional Forces Command.

Field Marshal Hikmat Omar, the Director General of Personnel and Volunteers Affairs in the Peshmerga Ministry, highlighted the significance of the reforms initiated over the past four years under the Ninth Government. With guidance from the Prime Minister and assistance from the international coalition, a dedicated team has been diligently working on implementing systemic reforms within the Kurdistan Region's armed forces. Notably, the reforms have reached an advanced stage with Brigades 15, 17, 18, 19, 21, 22, 23, 24, 26, and 30 nearing completion, having successfully fulfilled 90% of their formation requirements. Additionally, Brigades 25 and 27 are progressing well and are anticipated to be fully operational in the near future.

These reform efforts encompass an extensive range of actions, including the evaluation of personnel through interviews conducted by specialized committees. Under the framework of Reform Law No. 38, individuals eligible for retirement will be identified. Wounded and disabled personnel will undergo assessment by a medical committee. Moreover, qualified candidates for military service will be selected and organized according to a well-defined plan. The implementation of these measures is expected to yield the desired outcomes in due time.

The Director General of Personnel and Volunteers Affairs, Hikmat, underscored that the ongoing reforms have led to the establishment of 28 brigades thus far. These reforms, meticulously orchestrated by the current government, are being carried out under the vigilant oversight of the coalition forces and the Peshmerga Ministry. The initiative adheres closely to a meticulously structured plan developed beforehand to ensure the effectiveness and efficiency of the reforms.

In conclusion, the Kurdistan Regional Government's commitment to reforming and unifying the Peshmerga forces stands as a testament to their dedication to enhancing regional security and stability. As these strategic transformations unfold, the region is poised to strengthen its position and forge ahead into a more secure future.
