Iraq, Turkey to Meet Next Week to Discuss Kurdistan Region's Oil Exports
Baghdad, Iraq (June 15, 2023): Iraq and Turkey have reached an agreement to meet in Baghdad next week to discuss the resumption of the Kurdistan Region's oil exports which have been put on hold for nearly three months, said an Iraqi official on Thursday.
The Kurdistan Region's oil exports through Turkey's Ceyhan port are yet to resume after being halted in late March following a ruling from a Paris-based arbitration court saying that Ankara had breached its 1973 pipeline agreement with Baghdad.
The court ruled that Turkey had failed to prevent the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) from exporting oil without the permission of the federal government. The ruling also ordered Turkey to pay Iraq $20 billion in damages.
The meeting between Iraq and Turkey next week is seen as an important step in resolving the dispute over the KRG's oil exports. If the two sides are able to reach an agreement, it would be a major boost for the Iraqi economy, which has been struggling in recent years.
The Iraqi government has said that it is committed to resolving the dispute with the KRG through dialogue. The government has also said that it is willing to compromise on some of its demands in order to reach an agreement.
The meeting between Iraq and Turkey next week is a sign that both sides are willing to work towards a solution. If the two sides are able to reach an agreement, it would be a major victory for both countries.
