Zelensky calls on Germany to tear down new 'wall' between 'free and unfree' Europe

On Thursday, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelensky addressed German parliament via video link, asking them to help destroy a new "wall" he said Russia was erecting in Europe. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials accused Russia of deliberately attacking a theatre where more than a thousand people were sheltering in the besieged city of Mariupol. The casualty toll is still unclear as shelling hampers rescue efforts. 

 In an emotional video address to German parliament on Thursday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called on the country to tear down the new "wall" he said Russia was building between "free and unfree" Europe, invoking the fall of the Berlin Wall.

The Kremlin on Thursday rejected the top UN court’s order to halt the Ukraine offensive. The International Court of Justice (ICJ) at The Hague ruling called for an “immediate” suspension. The Kremlin’s spokesman said Russia “cannot take this decision into account”.

At least one person was killed and three wounded after remains of a downed missile hit a 16-storey residential building in Kyiv on Thursday morning, according to emergency services.

Ukraine said Wednesday that Russia had destroyed a theatre harbouring more than a thousand people in the besieged port city of Mariupol, with the death toll as yet unknown.

President Joe Biden called Russian President Vladimir Putin a “war criminal” on Wednesday, triggering an immediate angry riposte from Russia.

US President Joe Biden on Wednesday said the United States was offering an additional $800 million in security assistance to Ukraine to combat Russia's invasion, with the new package including drones and anti-aircraft systems.

In its latest figures, the UNHCR said more than 3 million Ukrainians have fled the country since the war began on February 24. The UN children’s agency said around half of those who have fled are children.
