Greek PM's visit to Erbil postponed due to militia attacks

Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Greek prime minister and his deputy for economic affairs, and three cabinet ministers and 26 companies were scheduled to visit the Kurdistan Region next week, but were delayed for two days due to last Tuesday's attack on Erbil International Airport.

Today, Thursday, July 8, 2021, Soran Abubakr Aziz, Vice President of the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry, told the Rudaw Media Network that it has been decided that the Greek Prime Minister and his deputy and three other Greek ministers will visit Erbil on the 13th of this month.

Regarding the reason for the delay in the visit, Soran Abu Bakr Aziz said that the attacks on Erbil International Airport and Ain Al-Assad Military Base and the deteriorating situation in Iraq are the main reason in general.

According to the official of the Erbil Chamber of Commerce and Industry, it was decided that the Greek delegation would visit Baghdad on the 12th of this month and arrive in Erbil the next day, meet with a number of high-ranking officials of the Kurdistan Region, and that the economy was the main question of the guest delegation.

The Greek government delegation consisted of the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister for Economic Affairs, Ministers of Investment, Trade, Agriculture, along with 26 companies in the fields of agriculture, industry, construction, contracting, as well as investment.

Last Tuesday, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) announced that Erbil International Airport was attacked by drones without causing any casualties.

This is the sixth time that the international coalition forces, especially the American forces in Erbil, have been bombarded with missiles and attacked by militias with drones.

The Prime Minister of the Kurdistan Regional Government, Masrour Barzani, during a visit to Europe, Friday, June 11, 2021, met with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis in the capital, Athens, and urged Greek companies to open businesses in the Kurdistan Region.
