ERBIL - Russian fighter jets have left killed up to 200 insurgents of the Islamic State in Syria, the country's Ministry of Defense said in a statement on Monday.

The airstrikes were reportedly carried out in northeast of Palmyra in Syria, where ammunition, vehicles, and explosive devices were also destroyed, the statement explained.

The airstrikes come while the Islamic State is still active in both Iraq and Syria, posing a serious threat to security forces and civilians.

Kurdish leaders have often called on the international partners to take the IS resurgence into the consideration and provide more support to confront the jihadist group in the region.

The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) also announced the capturing of six militants in two operations conducted in Deir ez-Zor and Hasakah provinces.
