Mohamed ElBaradei, former chief of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has described the ongoing political transition in Egypt as a travesty, according to a statement he posted on his twitter account Saturday.

“Election of a president before constitution defining political system is a travesty. Always going against the tide & always paying for it,” the liberal ElBaradei wrote.

On Feb. 13, ElBaradei referred on twitter to the military council as having “traits of Fascist regime.”

“Traits of Fascist regime: unidentified conspiracies; accusations of treason & anti-religion; spread of panic. Not what revolution had in mind.”

In January, he announced that he would not run for president because “the former regime did not fall,” referring to the ruling military council.

“I have examined the best ways of serving the goals of the revolution and I found that there is no official post for me, not even the post of President,” ElBaradei in his January announcement. "The captains of the vessel are still treading old waters, as if the revolution did not take place."

ElBaradei had proposed during talks on a transition roadmap that drafting a constitution take place first before elections, but in a popular referendum it was decided that elections take place first before a new constitution is drafted.

Following the parliamentary elections, in which Islamist political parties won sweeping majority, the Nobel peace laureate continued to push for a new constitution before the presidential elections are held. Now it has become clear that a new constitution would not be drafted before a new president is in place.
