Egypt remains in turmoil 1 year after Mubarak’s fall
Mubark’s resignation brought an initial feeling of optimism in the country. But one year later, many people in Egypt are still unsatisfied with the current government.

One year ago, Egypt saw the fall of strongman Hosni Mubarak. But despite initial optimism, the country remains in turmoil.

On Friday, the day before the anniversary, thousands of Egyptians marched to the Defense Ministry to demand the ruling Supreme Council of the Armed Forces hand over power to a civilian government.

Army units blocked access to the Ministry, where military police and barbed wire cordoned off the area.

However, in a statement read on Egyptian State Television, the military defended their handling of the transitional period. They promised to see presidential elections through on the previously announced dates.

"Days ago, we delivered our first promise, and handed over legislative powers to the parliament during their first session, convening following elections that were held freely and fairly. And from here, we prepare to complete our promises; and the opening of the door for presidential nominations was scheduled for the 10th of March.

Presidential powers will be handed over to the president after the elections, by which time, the transitional period will be complete and your loyal and brave army will return to their main mission, which is defending the borders."

The Muslim Brotherhood, while not involved in the protests, has called for a coalition government to replace the military-appointed one.

Activists have called for a large strike to mark the first anniversary of Mubarak’s fall. They are hoping for changes that will bring a better government and a better life for all of Egypt.
