Iraqi Foreign Minister Calls for Stronger International Cooperation to Combat IS Threat

Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein has issued a stark warning about the continued presence of the Islamic State (IS) as a serious threat to Iraq and regional security. Speaking at a press conference on Sunday following a meeting of Syria’s neighboring countries, Hussein emphasized the need for enhanced regional and international cooperation to eliminate the extremist group.

“Fighting the terrorist IS is our duty, but it requires broader support from the international community,” Hussein stated, underscoring the global nature of the challenge posed by IS. He called for unified efforts to address the ongoing threat, which he said continues to destabilize Iraq and the wider region.

Hussein also highlighted the importance of dialogue in achieving lasting stability in Syria, urging engagement with all segments of Syrian society. He stressed that a comprehensive approach, involving political and social inclusivity, is essential for resolving the Syrian crisis and countering the influence of extremist groups like IS.

In addition, the Foreign Minister emphasized the critical role of intelligence-sharing among Syria’s neighboring states in combating IS. “The presence of IS continues to undermine security in both Iraq and the wider region,” he warned, reiterating Iraq’s commitment to counterterrorism efforts and its readiness to collaborate with regional and international partners.

The meeting of Syria’s neighboring countries, which included discussions on security and stability in the region, comes amid ongoing concerns about the resurgence of IS activities in parts of Iraq and Syria. Hussein’s remarks reflect growing calls for a coordinated response to address the persistent threat posed by the group.

As Iraq continues to grapple with the aftermath of IS’s territorial defeat, the Foreign Minister’s appeal for stronger international support underscores the need for sustained efforts to prevent the group’s resurgence and ensure long-term security in the region.
