Syria's Interim President Calls for Peace Amid Escalating Violence

Syria's interim president, Ahmad al-Sharaa, has called for national unity and peace following days of violent clashes between security forces and loyalists of ousted President Bashar Assad. The death toll from the uprising has risen to over 1,000, with hundreds of Alawite civilians reportedly killed in reprisal attacks.
Speaking at a mosque in Damascus, Sharaa emphasized the importance of preserving national unity and civil peace, stating, "We must live together in this country, with fairness and justice among the people." The violence, which erupted in the coastal provinces of Latakia and Tartus, has been described as the worst since Assad's fall.
International Condemnation and Calls for Justice
The United Nations and the United States have condemned the killings, with UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk urging an immediate end to the violence. Germany also called on Syria's transitional government to prevent further attacks and ensure accountability.
Middle East expert Bente Scheller highlighted the fragility of the situation, stressing that justice for atrocities is essential for stability. "Justice is not a luxury. Justice is a remedy against revenge," she said.
