Macron Calls for SDF Integration into Syria’s Security Forces

French President Emmanuel Macron on Thursday urged Syria’s new leadership to fully integrate the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) into its security apparatus, emphasizing their crucial role in safeguarding Damascus’ security interests.

Speaking at an international conference in Paris on the future of Syria, Macron reaffirmed France’s commitment to the SDF, describing them as essential allies in the fight against terrorism. He highlighted their sacrifices and battlefield effectiveness in defeating the Islamic State (IS), stressing that France remains loyal to its partners in the anti-IS coalition.

“Their full integration into the Syrian transition will first serve your security objectives because they are strong fighters,” Macron said. “Your responsibility today is to integrate them and allow them to join forces with the same objective: to combat terrorist groups that destabilize you and to maintain your sovereignty.”

Macron’s remarks come amid Syria’s ongoing political transition, with the new leadership seeking to establish national unity while navigating complex regional and international challenges. France, a key member of the US-led anti-IS coalition, maintains a military presence in Rojava and has actively supported intra-Kurdish unity talks, which have faced repeated delays.

Last month, Syria’s interim president, Ahmed al-Sharaa, met with SDF commander Mazloum Abdi and confirmed that the new Syrian army would incorporate the SDF. Abdi expressed readiness to integrate the SDF into a national military framework, provided that mutually acceptable terms are established.

The United Nations Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, echoed Macron’s call for inclusivity in Syria’s security and governance structures. He emphasized the importance of ensuring all political and military components play a role in shaping the country’s future.

France’s push for SDF integration underscores the broader international efforts to stabilize Syria and secure long-term peace, as the nation undergoes significant political changes.
