The head of Turkey’s National Intelligence Organization (MIT), Ibrahim Kalin, held high-level talks in Tehran with senior Iranian officials to discuss counterterrorism efforts, including the fight against the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) and the Islamic State (IS), Turkish state media reported.
According to Anadolu Agency, Kalin met with Iran’s Intelligence Minister, Ismail Khatib, and National Security Council Secretary-General, Ali Akbar Ahmadian. The discussions focused on PKK activity along the Turkey-Iran border and in the Kurdistan Region, particularly in Sulaymaniyah province, where Iran holds considerable influence.
Turkey has long urged Iran to take a more active role against the PKK, which Ankara claims has a presence on Iranian territory. Turkish officials have also emphasized the need for closer coordination on PKK movements in the Kurdistan Region.
Beyond counterterrorism, the meetings addressed the latest developments in Syria and explored possibilities for a ceasefire in Gaza.
While Iranian media provided limited coverage of the visit, brief reports acknowledged Kalin’s meetings with Khatib and Ahmadian. Iranian sources stated that the discussions underscored the closeness of bilateral relations and the shared security concerns between the two countries.
