SDF Leader Mazloum Abdi Calls for Democratic Transition Amid “Historic Moment” in Syria
Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) Commander-in-Chief Mazloum Abdi has described Syria's current political developments as a "historic moment" and an opportunity for fundamental change in the country’s future.
In a statement shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Abdi referred to the fall of what he called "the oppressive regime in Damascus," signaling a significant shift in Syria’s political landscape.
“This is a historic moment,” Abdi stated, highlighting the potential for a transformative period in Syria’s governance. He called for the establishment of a new political order grounded in democratic principles, justice, and equality for all Syrian citizens.
The commander emphasized that the rights of all Syrians must be safeguarded in this new framework, stressing the importance of inclusivity in the envisioned political system.
Abdi’s remarks come amid growing speculation over potential regime change in Damascus. While details of the political transition remain unclear, opposition groups, international actors, and regional stakeholders have been closely monitoring the situation.
The SDF, which controls large parts of northeastern Syria, has long advocated for greater autonomy and a decentralized political system as part of any settlement to the Syrian conflict.
Abdi’s statement is seen as a strategic call for international support for a democratic transition, especially as the region faces ongoing geopolitical challenges. However, neither the Syrian government nor its key allies, such as Russia and Iran, have issued official responses to his comments.
The next steps in Syria’s political transition remain uncertain, but the SDF’s push for democratic reform reflects broader calls for change after more than a decade of civil war and humanitarian crisis.
