Hundreds Participate in 11th International Erbil Marathon to Promote Athleticism and Environmental Awareness

Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The 11th International Erbil Marathon took place on Friday, drawing hundreds of local and international participants in a celebration of athleticism and environmental consciousness.
The event, organized by the Erbil Marathon Organization, featured athletes, enthusiasts, and Iraqi champions from cities across the country. Abdulsattar Younis, head of the organization, emphasized the marathon's environmental mission. “This marathon aims to raise awareness about preserving a clean environment in Erbil,” Younis told Kurdistan 24.
The 21-kilometer race, supervised by 50 referees, saw 500 runners competing around Sami Abdulrahman Park. The top five finishers are set to receive cash prizes, while all participants will be awarded medals in recognition of their efforts.
Traditionally held in late November, this year’s marathon was postponed to December due to the Kurdistan Region's elections. Despite the delay, the event maintained its prominence as a key sporting occasion in the region.
Since its inception, the Erbil International Marathon has grown into a platform that not only promotes athleticism but also fosters community spirit and advocates for environmental responsibility.
