Prime Minister Barzani Highlights MEPS 2024 as a Platform for Regional Solutions
Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Prime Minister Masrour Barzani opened the fifth Middle East Peace and Security Forum (MEPS 2024) at the American University of Kurdistan (AUK) with a speech emphasizing the importance of dialogue, collaboration, and education in addressing the region's challenges.
Barzani began by underlining the significance of the forum as a platform for meaningful discussions. "I trust that all viewpoints and decisions developed during these two days will be made available to decision-makers in the Kurdistan Region, Iraq, and the broader region for their benefit and consideration," he stated.
Strengthening MEPS as a Regional Hub
In his remarks, Barzani praised the growth of the MEPS forum, now in its fifth year, and reaffirmed the KRG’s commitment to supporting its continued success. "This marks the fifth time this conference has been hosted by the American University in Duhok. I commend the organizers and hope we can continue to expand and enhance this forum in the years ahead," he said.
Education as a Pillar of Progress
Highlighting AUK’s achievements, the Prime Minister lauded the university’s pursuit of international standards. "In less than a decade, the university has reached a significant international milestone by becoming a candidate for New England Commission of Higher Education (NECHE) accreditation. This is a remarkable achievement for a ten-year-old institution," Barzani noted, emphasizing the role of education in shaping the region's future.
Democracy in Action
Barzani also reflected on the recent parliamentary elections in the Kurdistan Region, calling them a testament to democratic progress. "I must thank the people of Kurdistan for conducting a successful parliamentary election in a Middle East region that faces numerous challenges," he said, expressing gratitude for the trust and participation of voters.
A Vision for the Forum’s Impact
The Prime Minister concluded his address by expressing hope that the forum’s recommendations would translate into tangible benefits for the people of the region. "The outcomes of this forum will serve the interests of all Iraqi people, and we can benefit from its recommendations," he asserted.
A Platform for Collaboration
The MEPS 2024 forum, hosted by AUK, has become a focal point for regional dialogue, drawing high-level participation from leaders, diplomats, and academics. Under Barzani’s leadership, the event highlights the Kurdistan Region's role as a hub for discussions on peace, security, and development in the Middle East.
