Kurdistan Region Takes Bold Steps Toward Renewable Energy at COP29

On the fifth day of the 29th Climate Change Conference (COP29), a panel discussion on the future of energy in Iraq and the Kurdistan Region shed light on groundbreaking renewable energy initiatives by the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG).

Rawa Mohammed Penjweni, Director of Renewable Energy at the KRG Ministry of Electricity, outlined ambitious plans to transition from traditional energy sources to renewable alternatives. Speaking on the panel, Penjweni emphasized the global shift away from fossil fuels and highlighted the Region’s potential for solar energy development.

"The world is collectively working towards abandoning traditional energy sources," Penjweni said. "Given the Kurdistan Region's climate, solar energy is the best alternative."

Renewable Energy Goals

Penjweni announced that the KRG has already signed contracts for three solar energy projects, set to generate 350 megawatts of electricity. He detailed the Ministry’s strategic energy roadmap:

Short-term Goals:

Add 1,000 megawatts from renewable sources.
Long-term Goals:

Expand to 3,000 megawatts through diversified renewable energy sources, including:Solar power
Hydroelectric power
Wind energy
Additionally, Penjweni revealed plans to incorporate renewable energy into public transportation, emphasizing the need for a "well-structured, step-by-step plan" to achieve these goals.

A Climate-Driven Commitment

The Kurdistan Region's active participation in COP29 underscores its commitment to combating climate change and reducing its carbon footprint. With abundant sunshine year-round, the Region is ideally suited for solar energy projects, which play a crucial role in its renewable energy strategy.

These initiatives represent a significant step toward sustainable energy security and align with global efforts to decrease reliance on fossil fuels.

As the KRG moves forward with these projects, it aims to secure a cleaner, greener future for the Region and contribute meaningfully to global climate action.
