Israel Prepares for Possible Strike in Iraq as Iraqi Government Denounces Militia Actions

An adviser to Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani has issued a warning about potential Israeli strikes on Iraq in response to recent attacks by pro-Iranian militias targeting Israel. The remarks from Ibrahim Sumaidai, a senior adviser to the prime minister, underscore growing regional tensions and the challenges the Iraqi government faces in controlling militia groups within its borders.

Sumaidai, in an interview with Arab media, expressed that the Iraqi federal government has condemned the actions of these militias, whose operations have placed Iraq in a precarious position between regional powers. "I expect Israel to launch a military strike in Iraq soon," Sumaidai stated, noting that the provocative actions of Iraqi resistance groups have created "an embarrassing situation" for the Iraqi administration.

The adviser highlighted Iraq's strategic vulnerability in the event of an escalation. "Iraq is now an open country for Iran and Israel," he remarked. "We must prevent everyone from turning Iraq into a base for missiles and aircraft flying over it." Sumaidai emphasized that Iraq lacks the necessary defensive infrastructure, such as radar and anti-missile systems, to adequately protect its airspace from potential threats.

Sumaidai also commented on Israel’s advanced military capabilities, particularly in air defense and counter-strike technologies, as demonstrated in recent operations against Iran. "This indicates that Israel possesses more military technology than is widely known," he explained, suggesting a serious challenge for Iraq’s defense should an Israeli incursion occur.

Reports from Israeli media have echoed this possibility, suggesting that Israeli intelligence has already identified potential targets within Iraq. Israeli officials have allegedly conveyed a warning to Baghdad, indicating that further militia attacks would prompt a swift and decisive response.

As regional tensions escalate, Iraq finds itself under pressure to maintain its sovereignty and prevent its territory from becoming a staging ground for foreign hostilities.
