Iraqi Parliament Postpones Vote on Key Laws, Including Personal Status and General Amnesty

The Iraqi Parliament announced the postponement of votes on four significant laws during its Sunday session, October 27, 2024. The decisions included delaying deliberations on the Personal Status Law, the General Amnesty Law, and other crucial legislative proposals.

According to a report obtained by Kurdistan24, the Parliament's Media Office confirmed the delay, stating that a vote on the draft law concerning the return of properties to their original owners—specifically those affected by decisions of the dissolved Revolutionary Command Council—has been postponed. Additionally, the proposed amendment to the Personal Status Law No. (188) of 1959 will also be deferred.

Further postponements include the second amendment to the General Amnesty Law No. (27) of 2016, as well as the vote on a draft law concerning service and retirement provisions for the Popular Mobilization Forces (PMF) Authority.

The Parliament did not clarify whether these legislative matters would be revisited in the next session or scheduled for future discussions. The deferral of these votes leaves questions about the timeline for these critical laws and their implications for Iraqi governance and legal reforms.
